  4.1 Clause

# General

The general subclause introduces the principles without fixing a single description template. It leaves the organisation to apply them at the level of detail its own decisions need, which is why two firms can both follow the draft and produce different documents.

## What this settles

A general clause is a warning against false uniformity. The framework is meant to make descriptions comparable, not identical, and the level of detail is a judgement the organisation has to record.

## Who it binds

The organisation, as a method choice. The absence of a fixed template is not permission to be vague; it moves the burden of justification to the team.

## What to do in your practice

State the level of detail in the description itself: how many method families, how many capabilities, and what counts as enough evidence for a cell. A reader should be able to see the resolution of the picture before reading the picture.

## Evidence an auditor or regulator asks for

Three artefacts that make this unit checkableA short method note stating the resolution and the evidence rule.Makes the judgement explicit and reviewable.
Two system descriptions at the same resolution.Proves the method is repeatable across the estate.
A review note where the resolution was changed and why.Shows the method is maintained rather than frozen.

Ask your teamAt what resolution are we describing systems, and would a second team reach the same resolution without asking us?

## Common gaps this page catches

- Every system description uses a different level of detail, so they cannot be compared.

- The resolution is set by whoever fills the template that day.

- No evidence rule exists, so a filled cell and an empty cell look alike.

## What to prepare before publication

Write a one-page method note: the resolution, the evidence rule and the review cadence. Use it for the next two systems before rolling it out.

## How to test it here

Take one live system rather than a template, find the field or sentence where General is used, and put this page beside it. Record the answer, the artefact and the date. A glossary entry on its own is an intention; a dated record beside a live artefact is evidence.

## What this page does not claim

The page does not reproduce the draft, does not know the descriptor wording that the public preview withholds, and does not certify the system or the organisation. It states the unit at the claim level "principles clause" and stops where the public record stops.

## Common questions

What does General mean in ISO/IEC DIS 42102?
The general subclause introduces the principles without fixing a single description template. It leaves the organisation to apply them at the level of detail its own decisions need, which is why two firms can both follow the draft and produce different documents.
What evidence should we keep for 4.1?
A short method note stating the resolution and the evidence rule. Two system descriptions at the same resolution.
Is General a requirement?
No. The draft is a descriptive framework. It sets no management system requirement and no conformity test. It becomes binding only when a contract, a regulator or a management system adopts it.
