7.1 Clause
General
The general subclause introduces the framework and the way it is used. It sets the expectation that the matrix describes a system rather than ranking it, and that the same structure can be applied to systems of very different sizes.
What this settles
A general introduction is where a reader decides whether the framework is an assessment or a description. That decision governs how the output is used, so it has to be made explicit.
Who it binds
The organisation, as a method choice. It sets no duty and no threshold.
What to do in your practice
State in the method note that the matrix describes and does not score. If the organisation needs a score, use a separate assessment and link it, rather than inventing a number from the grid.
Evidence an auditor or regulator asks for
| A method note stating the descriptive use and the excluded uses. | Prevents the matrix being read as an assessment. |
|---|---|
| A link from the matrix to any separate assessment in use. | Keeps description and judgement apart. |
| A recipient note naming the decision the matrix supports. | Ties the output to a real use. |
Is anyone turning our matrix into a score, and what would that score actually measure?
Common gaps this page catches
- A maturity score is derived from the matrix and presented as assurance.
- The matrix is used to rank vendors on a basis it was never designed for.
- The descriptive purpose is written in the method note and contradicted by the cover page.
What to prepare before publication
Add the use statement to the template and remove any score derived from the grid. If a score is needed, name the assessment that produces it.
How to test it here
Take one live system rather than a template, find the field or sentence where General is used, and put this page beside it. Record the answer, the artefact and the date. A glossary entry on its own is an intention; a dated record beside a live artefact is evidence.
What this page does not claim
The page does not reproduce the draft, does not know the descriptor wording that the public preview withholds, and does not certify the system or the organisation. It states the unit at the claim level "framework clause" and stops where the public record stops.
Common questions
- What does General mean in ISO/IEC DIS 42102?
- The general subclause introduces the framework and the way it is used. It sets the expectation that the matrix describes a system rather than ranking it, and that the same structure can be applied to systems of very different sizes.
- What evidence should we keep for 7.1?
- A method note stating the descriptive use and the excluded uses. A link from the matrix to any separate assessment in use.
- Is General a requirement?
- No. The draft is a descriptive framework. It sets no management system requirement and no conformity test. It becomes binding only when a contract, a regulator or a management system adopts it.
