2 Clause
Normative references
The draft depends on ISO/IEC 22989:2022 for the vocabulary it does not define itself. A reader who does not hold that standard cannot read this one completely, because the meaning of the central terms is fixed there.
What this settles
A reference is a dependency, not a courtesy. It tells the reader which edition of the vocabulary governs the words in this framework, so a later edition of 22989 does not silently change what the matrix means.
Who it binds
The organisation that adopts the framework: it needs the referenced standard available to the people who use the descriptors. In a certification or procurement setting the reference becomes part of the evidence.
What to do in your practice
Put both designations on the reading list and record which edition you hold. Where your own glossary differs from the referenced vocabulary, keep the difference visible instead of letting two meanings share one word.
Evidence an auditor or regulator asks for
| A controlled reading list naming ISO/IEC 22989:2022 and its edition. | Proves the vocabulary dependency was recognised. |
|---|---|
| The firm glossary with a column for the referenced definition. | Shows where local usage departs from the standard. |
| A distribution record showing the referenced standard is available to the descriptor users. | Answers the practical question an assessor asks. |
If a new joiner read our characterization tomorrow, would they know which vocabulary edition governs the words?
Common gaps this page catches
- The framework is adopted without the referenced vocabulary, so each team uses its own meanings.
- A local glossary conflicts with the referenced standard and nobody has recorded the difference.
- The referenced edition is not recorded, so updates cannot be traced.
What to prepare before publication
Add the referenced standard to the controlled document list, record its edition and give the descriptor users access to it before the first characterization workshop.
How to test it here
Take one live system rather than a template, find the field or sentence where Normative references is used, and put this page beside it. Record the answer, the artefact and the date. A glossary entry on its own is an intention; a dated record beside a live artefact is evidence.
What this page does not claim
The page does not reproduce the draft, does not know the descriptor wording that the public preview withholds, and does not certify the system or the organisation. It states the unit at the claim level "normative reference" and stops where the public record stops.
Common questions
- What does Normative references mean in ISO/IEC DIS 42102?
- The draft depends on ISO/IEC 22989:2022 for the vocabulary it does not define itself. A reader who does not hold that standard cannot read this one completely, because the meaning of the central terms is fixed there.
- What evidence should we keep for 2?
- A controlled reading list naming ISO/IEC 22989:2022 and its edition. The firm glossary with a column for the referenced definition.
- Is Normative references a requirement?
- No. The draft is a descriptive framework. It sets no management system requirement and no conformity test. It becomes binding only when a contract, a regulator or a management system adopts it.
